Summary:

Investigates and analyzes feasibility of system requirements and develops system architectural documentation and specifications. Identifies methods, solutions, and process improvement to assist current system engineering admins in their day-to-day responsibility.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Familiarize and document the day-to-day operations of the RRS host computers through monitoring system performance, configurations, maintenance and patching. Ensures that records of system downtime and equipment inventory are properly maintained. Applies to documenting revisions to host system firmware, OS and software. Works with vendors to assist support activities. Use hardware management consoles to manage physical components and micro code
  • Mirror Administrative staff and developers including training, evaluating, and recommending improvements.
  • Documents procedures and programs for backup and restoration of host operating systems, storage, databases and host-based applications.
  • Develops and coordinates project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on the customer organizations. Provides leadership in planning and implementation of projects for Operations and enterprise systems administration.
  • Develops tools, procedures, and training sessions for Operations, Desktop Support and Systems Development staff to assist with work.
  • Stays current with technological developments in systems engineering technology and recommends ways for RRS to take advantage of new technology.
  • Positions in this classification may perform all or some of the responsibilities above and all positions perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of: Programming languages and operating systems; current equipment and technologies in use; UNIX/Linux (AIX 7.1) system administration, Linux system administration(/RHEL7-8/Ubunutu16-22), enterprise backup and recovery procedures, and system performance monitoring tools; effective project management techniques; principles and practices of effective management and supervision.
  • Ability to: Plan, organize and document (VISIO and EXCEL) complex system design activities and
  • Preferred Work Experience: experience or familiarization of infrastructure/server environments performing monitoring (hardware and/or software); with an emphasis on Visio and Project planning.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program in Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills: Basic knowledge of operating systems, networking, and scripting (e.g., Python).
  • Problem-solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Communication: Good verbal and written communication.
  • Willingness to Learn: Ready to adapt and grow in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Demands:

Learned physical skill is required for keyboarding and use of peripheral equipment. Moderate lifting.

Work Environment:

The work environment includes typical computer-related noise with exposure to computer hardware and video screens. It is fast paced with production issues dictating and changing work priorities. The incumbent is on call to provide support services during off hours. Scheduled night and weekend work is required.  You must be energetic and self-motivated to keep up.
