Summary:

The Merchandiser’s responsibilities include the allocation of merchandise to the stores as it is received at the Distribution Center, monitoring store inventories; communicating with store management concerning merchandise needs; and maintaining ideal inventory levels by way of transfers and replenishment. Merchandise Buyer should be able to evaluate current trends and fashion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities vary depending on the company and retail sector, but typically include:

  • Liaising with buyers, analyst, stores, suppliers and distributors.
  • Track trends in consumer consumption to determine which products should be sold.
  • Maintain stock level; Manage product price mark downs and ups by keeping up with trends.
  • Evaluate prior sales to establish future fulfillment needs.
  • Research suppliers and negotiate contracts for product fulfillment processing.
  • Place orders and ensure inventory is properly distributed.
  • Attend vendor meetings weekly and conference calls monthly.
  • Attend tradeshows and conferences to stay abreast of industry standards.
  • Involve stores for contest to get sales goals and idea for the fashion trends.
  • Be able to negotiate terms with vendors and cost prices, ordering stock, agreeing timescales and delivery dates and completing the necessary paperwork.
  • Analyzing the previous season’s sales and reporting on the current season’s lines.
  • Gathering information on customer’s reactions to products.
  • Managing, training and supervision junior staff.

Qualification:

  • Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising or related field; 3-4 years retail back ground with management or leadership role experience.
  • Language Ability: English. Ability to speak effectively with vendors and employees of the company.
  • Math Ability: Basic Mathematics or statistics.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills: Knowledge in Oracle System, Intermediate level in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
